Our grandfather was Galveston (Poppa) Shipley, whose mother was born in enslavement in 1861. In pictures you will see Galveston as a six year old student at Harrison. He later worked as its janitor, teacher and ultimately took over its educational helm and maintained it for 34 years. He worked and studied hard to educate himself and his students. He took the scraps he was given while striving for a better life through education. We welcome you to join us as we share the history and photos of Harrison School alumnae and the opportunity that was created in 1888.
